  • Resource Recovery System Building

    Arnold O. Chatland Resource Recovery Plant


      Accepted Material:

    Food related goods such as fruits, vegetables, meat, pasta, bread, dairy products, baking ingredients as well as pet food, floral material, as well as plants and soil material.

      Process:

    Turns burnable garbage into electricity using natural gas boilers.

      Food Waste Diversion / Compost Program:

    Help keep food waste out of the landfill by purchasing a $10 starter kit to compost.

      Redeem your bottles and cans!

    1. Bring in your bottles and cans in bags
    2. They will count your bottles and cans
    3. Get your deposit back!!

    Cans and bottles are gathered in exchange for 5 cents received via cash or Venmo.


Iowa State Campus Recycling Programs

  • Recycling Badges

    Single Stream Recycling


      Process

    When students recycle at Iowa State, it is taken to a Materials Recovery Facility located in Des Moines where material is sorted and used to produce new products.

      Accepted Material

    Paper, plastics #1 through #7, cans.


  • Cardboard

    Cardboard Recycling


      Process

    When cardboard is collected in the green dumpsters around many of the main campus buildings and loading docks, it is picked up by Waste Management to be recycled appropriately.

      Accepted Material

    Corrugated cardboard containing a “waffle” layer with two outer pieces of paper is collected and recycled from the dumpsters. In this process, packing peanuts, Styrofoam, and other packaging materials are not recycled and should be removed before disposal.


  • Ames Glass Recycling

    Laboratory Glass Recycling


      Process

    Yellow bins are located on some buildings on campus on their docks as provided by the City of Ames glass recycling program, and additional collection can be requested by completing a glass pickup request form.

      Accepted Material

    Any color of glass and glass chemical storage containers. Alternatively, Windshields, food/beverage glasses, and mirrors are not accepted.
